America 'Obsessed' with cat-fighting women

Embracing the campy nature of their "Fatal Attaction" meets "The Temp" remake in the last week of their marketing campaign for "Obsessed," Screen Gems was rewarded with a impressive $11 million opening day for the Beyonce Knowles and Ali Larter thriller. Reviews have not been kind, but the "don't you try to touch my man" thriller touched a nerve in moviegoers. It's unclear whether it will drop off on Saturday or not, but the picture could do anywhere from $25-28 this weekend, a huge coup for the Sony Pictures division and no doubt convincing studio execs (or her agents) that Sasha Fierce can open a movie.

Coming in second was the Rogue Pictures programmer "Fighting" with $4.4 million. Arguably the first film Channing Tatum has opened on his own, the action flick could do between $11-13 million for the weekend. The result is disappointing only in that this release date caused the picture to loose a key component of its intended audience, women under 25, who instead flocked to "Obsessed." The picture will battle it out with the second weekend of "17 Again" which cumed only $3.8 million on Friday, but should get a bump on Saturday from star Zac Efron's tween following and also finish the three-day in $11-13 million range.

Fourth found the seemingly forgotten and mis-dated "The Soloist" with $3.2 million in only 2,000 theaters. The Robert Downey, Jr. and Jamie Foxx drama will be lucky to rake in $10 million for the weekend. More thoughts on "The Soloist's" release troubles here.

Rounding out the top five was DisneyNature's inaugural release, "Earth." The documentary already opened to a stellar $4 million on Wednesday and with Friday's $2.9 million has already cumed $8.5 million. Not shabby for an enviormental doc from a division that isn't necessarily mean to be a profit center for the Walt Disney Company. For the weekend, "Earth" could do between $8-9 million.

Here are Friday's top ten performers according to Box Office Mojo. Look for complete weekend estimates tomorrow on HitFix.
